Retaliation

Any unfavourable treatment of a whistleblower as a consequence of a report — for example dismissal, demotion, harassment, worse assignments or exclusion from promotion. The Whistleblower Act prohibits retaliation, and threats and attempts of retaliation are also unlawful. If a whistleblower nonetheless suffers retaliation, they are entitled to compensation, and the burden of proof can shift so the employer must show the treatment was unrelated to the report. The protection applies when the reporter believed in good faith that the information was accurate.
